Craftsmanship, design, and luxury: a heritage that strengthens competitiveness
Campania stands out as unique and excellent region in the Made in Italy fashion and design sector. Extraordinarily rich and diverse in its production chains, it is a region with a strong identity, thanks to its cultural, commercial and expressive ties with the Mediterranean. In this sense, Made in Italy in Campania takes on a connotation that enriches Italian production qualities through its particular identity, in which categories do not exist: art, cultural heritage, ancient craftsmanship, creativity, architecture and applied arts merge into everyday life and its products, giving rise to a landscape in which life and its manifestations are the result of a cultural process rooted in production knowledge.
The fashion sector, which involves around 22,000 companies, refers to a very long and complex supply chain of highly specialized small and medium-sized enterprises.
The TAC supply chain - Textiles, Clothing, Footwear (also including sectors such as tanning, accessories, goldsmithing, eyewear, cosmetics) - is highly differentiated in terms of productivity; in this context, craftsmanship of excellence is extremely functional for luxury brands.
A highly connected ecosystem, characterized by the presence of historic districts (recognized internationally) such as Naples, Aversa, Caserta and Nola, which express production expertise capable of combining manufacturing quality, new technologies and materials, craftsmanship and creativity. An integrated system that is particularly attractive for investments in the premium and luxury segments.
The geographical concentration in some areas creates truly specialized and collaborative hubs of excellence, such as Avellino (tanning and leather processing), Aversa (footwear), Marcianise (goldsmithing), Caserta (textiles, silks) and Naples (clothing). The presence of highly significant logistics and distribution hubs is also important.
As regards the design-oriented manufacturing sector, the campanian wood-furniture supply chain sees a majority of companies in the wood sector, employing more than 6,000 people, followed by the furniture and lighting sector; specifically, 61% of turnover is generated by the wood sector, 37% by the furniture sector and 2% by the lighting sector.
Campania exports about 18% of the total produced by the supply chain; the sector with the highest exports is furniture, with a share of 23% and a value of €62 million. The main export destinations in this case are France, the United States and Germany. For the wood sector, the main destinations are Spain, Germany and the United States. Campania also exports to Japan, where it accounts for about 20% of Italy's total exports; lighting products are mainly exported to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and France (data from the FederlegnoArredo Study Center).
